When Too Much good is Bad.

Did you know that giving kids TOO much praise can have a negative effect on how they treat others? What we say helps define who our children are and who they believe themselves to be. Too much praise can cause them to be more self centered, more competitive, and more apt to cut others down. The words we use can help them see themselves in a positive way -- kind, caring, gentle, considerate people. It helps them want to be this way.

Here are 5 strategies that we can use to foster positive, empathetic people. (taken from Michele Borba’s book: UNselfie: why empathetic kids succeed in our All about Me world)

  1. Take reality check- see how your child responds to your encouragement.
    1. Self-centered ad forgets other’s contributions: “I did great!”
    2. Dependent on praise/ needs constant approval: “DO you like it, MOMMY?”
    3. Demands/expects accolades: “Aren’t you going to tell me Good Job?”
    4. Tears others down to feel better about himself: “But, I’m Better!”
  2. Align praise with character-match behavior with identity. “You always make people feel good.”
  3. Use nouns, not verbs-invite them to be “helpers”
  4. Focus on character, not behavior-use labels to stress your child’s character, not behavior.
  5. Model It!- that speaks for itself. We have to adopt the behaviors we want our children to have.

Have a great week!
