Social media

Parenting is tough. There is so much out there now that we never even had to consider when we were growing up. At every corner there is a warning to be aware of this or watch out for that. It seems like it never stops. As a parent my anxiety is on a roller coaster most of the time.

The recent scare has been the Momo challenge. I am sure that most of you have heard something about it by now. Everywhere I looked on social media there was a story about it.

After I spoke with Ms. Finley and Mr. Henderson I looked at snopes.com. They share that it seems to be a hoax. There is no definitive evidence that it is true. But, it has caused quite a bit of fear.

I would encourage you to have a conversation with your child about using social media/ the internet/ YouTube, etc. Even if you have already talked to them about this it is a good time to review it. Tell them that using these outlets are fun and most of the time they are good but sometimes things pop up and they cause concern or can make the student feel uncomfortable. This is when they need to go to you and tell you about it. Make sure that they know they will not be in trouble if they bring this to you. It shows that they can handle the responsibility of using a device. Most of the kids are afraid that their parents will take away the device and then they will not be able to use it again. They want to be able to play their games or watch their favorite videos on YouTube so instead of losing this privilege they just keep the concern to themselves and try to process it on their own.

Today it is the Momo challenge, tomorrow it will be something else. The fear is always changing but we can combat this by having open conversations with our children. Make sure they know they can bring anything to us and we will discuss it with them. If they can’t talk to us they will talk to someone and that person may not have their best interest at heart.

Here is a great article from Common Sense Media about the challenges that are on social media.

High school Scholars

30 St. Albert 8th graders took their High School Placement Test at Trinity High School. 13 of them scored in the top 10%! Out of those students, 7 were named Steinhauser Scholars! Trinity designates 20 incoming freshmen as Steinhauser Scholars. Each receives a renewable, four-year tuition scholarship based upon outstanding achievement on the Placement Test.

This means 30% of ALL top scorers were St. Albert students! This is a huge achievement. We are so very proud of these gentlemen who not only achieve academic excellence, but represent St. Albert with such dignity and respect. Congratulations gentlemen!

louisville regional science & Engineering Fair

Seven 6th graders participated in the Louisville Regional Science and Engineering Fair March 2. They did a wonderful job sharing their scientific results with the judges and representing St. Albert. Students groups included James Walters and Cullen Spalding, Riley O'Bryan and Olivia Diamond, Townes Lanham, and Olivia Long and Ella Pankonin. Olivia Long and Ella Pankonin's project won 1st place in their category and they will be advancing to the State competition!

This group of students met throughout the year in the Science Fair Mentoring program. Manual MST students, led by Eliza Gallagher, helped students choose topics, design experiments, and refine their presentations for the competition. If you weren't able to participate this year, there is always next year!

Congratulations to all our participants!

Our last Open House of the school year is less than a week away. We would love to give them the opportunity to meet faculty, staff, parents, and students and share with them what makes St. Albert so great!

ash wednesday lesson

Father Albert came to visit the preschool on Friday to talk to our students about Ash Wednesday. He started out with the seasons of the year and then explained the seasons of the church. He also talked about Lent and getting ashes. He explained that it is a time we get ready for Jesus to rise from the dead. He also explained that the ashes come from branches that are burned and the blessed by the priest. He showed the students pictures of children who had received ashes.

scholarship tax credits

Momentum is building towards passing HB 205. HB 205 would create a Scholarship Tax Credit program that will make K-12 tuition at non-public schools, including faith based schools, more affordable for thousands of Kentucky families. You can click here and send an email to your state representative in a matter of minutes. You can also call your state representative at 1-800-372-7181 and ask them to pass House Bill 205. The operator will help you get the message to the right representative. It only takes a couple of minutes to make a difference!

PTO Elections

The PTO is now accepting your nominations for the following positions on the PTO Executive Board for the 2019-2020 school year!

We currently have one Executive Board position open for nominations: Vice President has a three (3) year term and requires one (1) prior year of service on St. Albert's PTO. As a parent at the school, you are automatically a PTO member so as long as you have been in the school for a year, you are eligible to run for office.

The positions of Past President (Laura Nash) and President (Chris Wahl) are closed as they are multi-year terms.

All nominees should show a strong commitment to the purpose of the PTO. You may nominate yourself or someone you think will honorably represent the position.

Please send in your nominations by February 15, 2019 to pto@stalbert.org.
