STRESS

Have you noticed that your child(ren) seems to be having more meltdowns? Are they quick to lose control and throw a tantrum? It could be stress.

We are all feeling it. It has been growing since March of last year. This constant state of anxiety. Our bodies may be experiencing the fight or flight response on a daily or weekly basis. We are not made to be in a constant state of fear. It causes us to feel angry, aggravated, and to act out. We may not feel it as intensely as we did in March, April, or May but it is still there, an undercurrent of insecurity and a rollercoaster of emotions. These feelings build up and have to be released in some way. No wonder our students are acting out. They may not know why or be able to really communicate it but we must be aware that they are affected by all of this stress.

The following was taken from an article by Carol Miller of The Middle School Counselor. She shares 6 ways to help our students deal with stress.

  1. Teach students to understand their stress. Stress is a normal part of everyday lives. There can even be good stress! We want to teach students that good stress can help get tasks done, meet our goals, keep us safe, and excited to try new things. We also have to acknowledge the bad stress, since that is what most students are familiar with. The bad stress is, when we don’t complete tasks, get sick, headaches, prevent us from falling asleep, change in eating habits, irritability and change in relationships. However, we are in luck because there are a lot of ways to manage stress, but we first need to be taught to recognize what stress is.

  2. Help students learn to identify the physical and emotional signs of stress and what is causing their stress. Help students have an idea of what stress feels like to them, whether it be good or bad stress.

  3. Teach students to identify what they can and cannot control. There are so many things that students stress about that are beyond their control. By helping them realize what they do have control over helps to shift what they spend their time thinking about.

  4. Have students identify their systems of support. Knowing who they can go to amongst their friends, their family and at school, can help students realize they don't have to face things alone. Let's face it, when we feel that someone has our backs we are more confident than when we feel we're alone.

  5. Explain healthy versus unhealthy coping skills. When we know what coping skills we are using, whether healthy or unhealthy, we can use this information to focus our energy on creating healthy coping habits.

  6. Define and use positive self talk. Our thoughts and words are powerful weapons. They can bring us towards success or be what holds us back. Positive self talk takes practice, and training our brain. Practicing gratitude and focusing on strengths helps to develop positive thinking.

I hope you have a relaxing winter break. Take time to enjoy your family and rejuvenate. There are 6 weeks until Spring Break.

Welcome New Students!

Please give a warm St. Albert welcome to the following students that started mid year at St. Albert the Great. We are excited to welcome them into our school family!

2021-2022 School Calendar

Our 2021-2022 School Calendar will be coming out in the next couple of weeks. I wanted to make you aware that the first day of school for the 2021-2022 school year will be Thursday, August 12 which will be a 12:30 dismissal. Please watch for the entire 2021-2022 school calendar to be sent out soon.

Book Fair!

We will be having a book fair this spring however it WILL NOT be this week. Scholastic is currently very understaffed and is ironing out details on the materials tour. As soon as we get a time frame we will let you know. Thank you to all of the parents and students that have been asking about it!

2021-22 School Board Open Positions

The School Board is now seeking volunteers and nominations for the open Voting Member positions for the upcoming 2021-22 school year. We are seeking individuals to fill the following two positions.

  • Policy Chair

    • The policy committee evaluates existing policies in the areas of Community Relations, Administration, Personnel, Students & Instruction and Business & Non-Instructional Operations. It also formulates any policy additions or changes needing to be addressed immediately. This is a great committee if you like rules or have experience in human resources, public relations, real estate, education, finance and law.

  • Technology Chair

    • The technology committee drafts a school technology plan, including budget, by assessing existing technology, prioritizing a wish list and gathering cost estimates on securing wish list items. It also evaluates how technology is being used effectively elsewhere. The committee works closely with school and parish technology personnel. This is a great committee if you have experience with information technology and computer programming or you just can’t live without the latest tech gadget.

If you would like to volunteer for an open position or submit a nomination, please email Aaron Giust, School Board Secretary, at schoolboard-secretary@stalbert.org your first and last name (or nominee's name) along with a contact number and email address by Friday, March 5, 2021.

All volunteers and nominees are required to meet with current School Board members for a Discernment Meeting the afternoon of March 7, 2021, to learn more about the Board and the responsibilities of Voting Members. The session will be held online and will last about 30 minutes. Only interested parties will receive the meeting invite. If you have a conflict but are still interested, then please email Aaron Giust, School Board Secretary, at schoolboard-secretary@stalbert.org. Thank you!

On Feb. 16 and Feb. 17, respectively, you will need to bring a clay pot, a cross to decorate along with filler to place in the pot to hold up your cross and any decorations needed to finish your project. Confirmation Work of Mercy!

Since the Regional Day of Service and a few other “Work of Mercy” projects have been cancelled; we are offering those who need to complete a Work of Mercy for the service component of Confirmation this opportunity to gather Thursday, Feb. 4 after school to create bags full of blessings and notes full of compassion for those who are homeless or feeling loss of companionship in Nursing Homes.

We will assign each person an item to bring and ask that one brings at least 20 donations of that item, and we will all sort them into Blessing Bags - Items such as warm socks, deodorant, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, lip balm, water bottles, granola bars, etc!

Please click Here to Reply if you will participate in this Work of Mercy for Confirmation, and we will send you your assigned donation that is needed for our Blessing Bags!
