be kind

Do you ever feel like things are spinning out of control and you don’t know how to get things back in order? I spoke with my brother this past week. He has two children, both playing a sport, he was sitting in his car waiting for one to be finished with practice.

I remember those days. Everyone needing to be in a different place and then once they got there all I could do was wait in the car until it was over to then go home and try to get everyone fed, bathed, homework checked and then for it to start all over again. It was just a whirlwind of days. I would wish for some time to myself. Time to make dinner, or do laundry, or just relax.

Ohhh how I wish I could go back again. My children are all over 18 now. To be honest, I have more time than I really want now. (And I still don’t like making dinner or doing laundry.)

With everything that is going on with COVID-19 and the protesting in our city we may find ourselves wishing for this time to be over and control to be regained. But, I encourage you to think about what good things may be coming from this time.

We can not control how other people think, act, or feel. But, we can choose how we do those things. That is how we get things back in order. We choose to be positive and loving to all. We choose to step out of our shoes and try to empathize with others. We choose to look at what is good in our world. We choose to teach our children to do the same thing.

Just something to think about

1st - 8th Grade Parent Orientations

Instead of an Orientation Night where the halls and classrooms are packed with parents and staff, we are taking a safer approach and offering sessions virtually. We want to provide you with valuable grade-specific information while keeping your family and our staff safe during this pandemic time.

Start, by listening to a welcome message from our Principal, Ellen Martin. Then click on the links that pertain to your family. Your child's teacher(s) will explain what the students are currently learning, what they will be learning, and class expectations, routines, and homework details. We look forward to working with you over the next 8 months as we assist your child, our student, during a successful school year ahead.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

October 12 & 13, 3-8pm

Our sign up for PTS conferences will open next Monday, October 5. PTS conferences will be offered on Monday, October 12 and Tuesday, October 13 from 3:00 - 8:00. You will be able to choose between two formats: virtual and in person meetings.

We are excited to meet with parents to share how the start of the school year has gone, and set goals for the rest of the year. Teachers will not be sharing fall MAP test results. We will be using our fall test results as a gauge for teachers as to where their students are: what needs to be covered, and where we need to go.

Send a Gratitude Gram to a Teacher or Staff Member!

Teaching during the coronavirus pandemic is far from typical. Administrators, teachers, assistants, and support staff are working longer and harder than ever to ensure our students receive the education and care they need and so deserve. In addition to academics, teachers are spending time taking temperatures multiple times a day, covering additional lunch and recess shifts, following strict and extensive bathroom and traveling schedules and protocols, ensuring the classrooms and bathrooms are regularly sanitized, helping students stay healthy and follow safety rules, being creative and flexible to add more outdoor time to their already busy schedules, helping students manage their own anxiety and fears in addition to their own, and navigating uncharted territory all while trying to please everyone. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

But our teachers are here because they love your children. We are grateful for our St. Albert families for allowing us the opportunity to educate your child in mind, body and spirit. Education may look different right now, but our care and commitment to our students is ever present. Our St. Albert community has reached out in many ways over the past few weeks to show support for our faculty and staff, and for that, we THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts.

We invite our parents and students to take advantage of our new "Gratitude Grams" initiative. They are a great way to provide staff encouragement and show appreciation during this challenging time. Simply print and fill out a Gratitude Gram with your words of gratitude, and return them to school with the appropriate faculty or staff members' names at the top. Your child can personally deliver them to the teacher during class, or send them through KidMail and we will ensure they get delivered to the correct recipients. For questions, please contact Janelle Richardson at jrichardson@stalbert.org. Thank you again for your support, flexibility, and continued trust in St. Albert the Great.

--- FROM YOUR PTO ---

Conference Dinner Signup

It's hard to believe it, but Parent/Teacher Conferences are just around the corner and we need your help. In keeping with tradition, the PTO will provide dinner for our teachers on both evenings of the conferences (Oct. 12th and Oct. 13th) in the teachers lounge. We are looking for volunteers to help provide additional items to make this a very special event for our teachers.

It is a wonderful way to show our gratitude to the teachers for all their hard work!! In addition it is an easy way to support the PTO if otherwise your schedule hasn't permitted.

PTO is Looking for a Stewardship Committee Co-Chair!

The Stewardship Committee is looking for a co-chair for this school year. Duties include working with the committee chair and parents from grades 5-7 to help organize service events and projects for each class. The service activities teach our students about service to others, which is the foundation of our Catholic faith. Through our actions, we are sharing God’s love with others in their time of need. If you would like more information please contact Peggy Hertel at ptostewardship@stalbert.org or 502-693-3398.

Yearbook Committee

The Yearbook committee would like to encourage parents, students, teachers, and staff to have their cameras ready! We will be incorporating a lot of candid photos into the yearbook this year. Special links to submit photos and more info coming soon!
